Cairo first developed as Fustat, a settlement founded after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 640 next to an existing ancient Roman fortress, Babylon. Until his death in 1848, Muhammad Ali Pasha instituted a number of social and economic reforms that earned him the title of founder of modern Egypt.
Cairo is the largest city in the Arab world and second largest in Africa, and the sixth largest in the world. Cairo is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza pyramid complex and the ancient cities of Memphis and Heliopolis are located in the Greater Cairo metropolitan area.
Cairo is located near the Nile Delta in Lower Egypt. Cairo was founded in 969 AD during the Fatimid dynasty, but the land composing the present-day city was the site of Ancient National Capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo.
Today, Cairo has the oldest and largest cinema and music industry in the Arab World, as well as the world’s second-oldest institution of higher learning, Al-Azhar University. Many international firms in media, businesses, and global organizations have regional headquarters in the city; the Arab League has had its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt for most of its existence.
In March 2015, President el-Sisi announced plans for a New Administrative Capital city to be built. Egypt’s New Administrative Capital is a new high tech city designed for the future. It will have over 50,000 civil servants, with many moving into facilities in late 2021. Future residents will exceed 6,000,000 in future years.
Egypt’s New Administrative Capital is located 75 kilometers east of Cairo, holding several projects worth around $300 billion. President Sisi launched the Digital Egypt platform Wednesday, July 6, 2022, to provide electronic services to all Egyptian people.
Egypt has opened its first electric light railway to link from Cairo and New Administrative Capital. This new high-tech city will be home to the new administrative and financial capital of Egypt, housing the main government departments and ministries and foreign embassies.
